Wrath of the Bloodeye

By Joseph Delaney
Rating: 4 1/4 stars

This is book 5 in the Last Apprentice series. In the last book, the Fiend, an incarnation of the devil, has been released by the witches at Pendle into the world, and he is determined to kill our apprentice Tom. To help keep him safe, the Spook sends Tom to an old apprentice of his, Bill Awkwright, with the hopes of toughening Tom up for a six month spell. Bill lives near canals and marshes and deals with the notorious water witches, particularly Morwena, who wields a Bloodeye that can paralyze anyone who sees it. Even worse, Tom discovers that Morwena is a child of the Fiend and that if one of his children kills Tom, he can be guaranteed freedom to rule the world forever. Can Tom survive his six months training with Awkright? When Tom needs help, Alice comes to his aid, but again she uses some dark magic. How can she be fully good if she still uses the dark? Tom realizes he might have to make some dangerous compromises with the dark if he is to fight the Fiend, but his master disagrees. Who is right? And who will survive a meeting with the Fiend? Another deliciously chilling and spooky story in the series, which remains consistently strong and has no end in sight!
